SCULPTORS
AND WOOD CARVERS
ART PAINTERS - DECORATION SCULPTORS
In the Gardena Valley, in the middle of the 17th century
there arised the artistic craft of wood carving as a result
of the modestly attempt to secure a secondary income carving
utensils for the home and the farm. |
The pioneers
of this craft were principally decoration sculptors who decorated
the picture frames and the clock stands. But in short time the wood
carvers turned onto more ambitious subjects. They developed sacred
works of art, crucifixes, figures of saints, stations of the cross
and cribs. The skillfulness of the Gardena sculptors so were able
to get famous over the borders of South Tyrol. The contemporary artistic
works aren't only sacred works but they mainly have a profan or pure
decorative disposition. And today the craft of wood carving is still
giving work to many hands and it is still yet creating from a big
creative source.
There
are reliable masters and vocational schools and schools of art in
Ortisei and Selva with an experience of many years who take care
for the education of the new young sculptors.
The difference
of handmade and machine moulded works of art is indicated by a trademark
from the chamber of commerce of Bolzano and gets fixed onto the
handmade sculptures by an expert.

Metal
badges with this mark are only fixed onto handmade sculptures
by an expert of the chamber of commerce.
